Docket vs. Full Case Record

A Boulder County docket is a list of events. The case file is what sits behind them. The docket shows a sentencing hearing set for 9 a.m. in Division 5. The file holds the motion, the plea, the presentence report, and the signed order. The Access Guide to Public Records says case documents are not available directly through the Judicial Branch website except for dockets, so the file must be requested.

Vendors are a third option. The Access Guide notes that third-party vendors linked by the Judicial Branch return a register of actions for a fee but do not provide court documents.

How to Read a Boulder County Docket Entry

Boulder County dockets read in short codes. The case number tells the user the year, class, and sequence. A 2024CR file is district criminal. A 2025DR file is domestic relations. A 2026T file is county traffic. CV is district civil, S is small claims, M is misdemeanor, JD is juvenile delinquency, CW is civil water, PR is probate.

Hearing types in a Boulder County criminal file cycle through advisement, bond, arraignment, pretrial, motions, trial setting, trial, and sentencing. Domestic relations files run from initial status conference to temporary orders, permanent orders, and motions to modify. Disposition codes show the outcome: dismissed with prejudice, dismissed without prejudice, plea, verdict, sentence, or judgment.

Division matters too. A division number or letter on a Boulder County docket is also a judicial officer. Division 13 is the chief district judge. Divisions J, M, O, and T are magistrate seats. Courtroom CJ sits at the Boulder County Jail at 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. If a case shows Courtroom CJ, the defendant appears at the jail, not the main courthouse.

Scheduled Returns and Walk-In Procedures

Boulder County publishes set return dates for some county court matters. County Court civil returns are Wednesday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. at the Boulder Combined Court and Friday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. at the Longmont Combined Court, except holidays and the Friday after Thanksgiving. Filers should check the docket for the assigned division before walking in.

Walk-in warrant info is a separate track. The Boulder court page lists a Walk-In Warrant Information section so a defendant with an active warrant can get a case added to a Boulder County docket. The page links to 20th Judicial District Walk-In Warrant Procedures and a Victim Rights Act crimes-ineligible list; VRA crimes may be excluded. For active warrants, the Sheriff's directory says the public must call Boulder County Courts at 303-441-3750 or appear with photo ID. For more, see Boulder County warrant records.

Payments and filings for both Boulder and Longmont can be mailed to ATTN: Clerk of Court, PO Box 4249, Boulder, CO 80306. Text reminders for court dates are set up by submitting form JDF 18 for each case and mailing or dropping it at the 20th Judicial District.

Requesting a Transcript of a Docketed Hearing

The Boulder County docket entry shows that a hearing happened. The transcript is the word-for-word record. To order one, the requester uses form JDF 4. Audio or CD requests can be emailed to 20Transcripts@judicial.state.co.us. Printed hard-copy transcript requests go through eScribers per the Boulder court page. Fees and turnaround depend on hearing length.

Sealed, suppressed, juvenile, and confidential proceedings sit outside that path. The record request form warns that suppressed cases, juvenile and probate records, or certain protected documents may require a U.S. government-issued photo ID, an attorney appearance, or a court order.

What a Boulder County Docket Does Not Show

The docket is broad in scope but narrow in detail. Several record types are restricted by statute, by Chief Justice Directive 05-01, or by court order. Some material is redacted at the docket level. Some matters are not on the public docket at all.

  • Sealed and suppressed cases: hidden from the public docket by statute or court order; access requires ID or a court order.
  • Juvenile detail: Title 19 and CJD 05-01 limit access to juvenile delinquency and dependency cases; party names may be reduced to initials.
  • Mental-health proceedings: commitment, competency, and treatment matters are restricted by statute and HIPAA-adjacent privacy.
  • Personal identifiers: Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, and protected addresses are redacted in the public view.
  • Municipal court cases: Boulder, Longmont, Lafayette, Louisville, Erie, Nederland, Lyons, and Superior city tickets are not in the state docket.

For full case file access, including pleadings and orders that the docket only summarizes, the requester turns to the record/document request form. For municipal cases, the user contacts the city court that issued the citation.
